Meet Chris, my all time favorite male model. Most artist cringe when a male model shows up to pose at life drawing. It's no secret that artist prefer to draw voluptuous figures. The main reason isn't perverse. It's because drawing thin models is more difficult. If this isn't obvious, try imagining drawing a balloon compared to drawing a ribcage. The first time I drew Chris was in a summer painting workshop at Cabrillo College. I was ecstatic when this 6' 150 lb man walked into the studio. A few years later he showed up at my local life drawing class.
Whether painting a person or a teapot, the goal is holding the viewer's attention. In this busy world it takes something remarkable to stop us in our tracks. That could be an event, like a surprising diagnosis or the unexpected death of a close friend. These events give us time to pause and reflect. A common vehicle into my psyche is music. This led me to start painting singer-songwriters whose music has impacted me. Look into their eyes. For a moment time stops. Music and memories take over.
