One in a series of knife paintings depicting the Santa Cruz Wharf. I took the reference photo during one of the summer free Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts. The lights were just coming on the their reflections danced in the water as people passed by.
Whether painting a person or a teapot, the goal is holding the viewer's attention. In this busy world it takes something remarkable to stop us in our tracks. That could be an event, like a surprising diagnosis or the unexpected death of a close friend. These events give us time to pause and reflect. A common vehicle into my psyche is music. This led me to start painting singer-songwriters whose music has impacted me. Look into their eyes. For a moment time stops. Music and memories take over.
