A self portrait in palette knife. 12x12" 2020. The reference selfie was taken in front of my north-facing cottage door. For a change, I didn't do an underpainting. I just went for it. in places you can see some of the natural clear gessoed linen canvas poking through. I especially love how the hair merges with the background. The colors are saturated, the knife strokes lively but the eyes hold it all together.
Whether painting a person or a teapot, the goal is holding the viewer's attention. In this busy world it takes something remarkable to stop us in our tracks. That could be an event, like a surprising diagnosis or the unexpected death of a close friend. These events give us time to pause and reflect. A common vehicle into my psyche is music. This led me to start painting singer-songwriters whose music has impacted me. Look into their eyes. For a moment time stops. Music and memories take over.
