Tracy's music is often somber but when she smiles her face is full of joy, peace and hope. I mixed orange into ivory black and a buff titanium to create warmth. The face is rendered with a brush while the rest of the painting is done with a heavy impasto with a knife. While I did use photo references, this image is a combination of several photos, so you will not see this exact image anywhere on the web. 12 x16" oil on wood panel, 2020
Whether painting a person or a teapot, the goal is holding the viewer's attention. In this busy world it takes something remarkable to stop us in our tracks. That could be an event, like a surprising diagnosis or the unexpected death of a close friend. These events give us time to pause and reflect. A common vehicle into my psyche is music. This led me to start painting singer-songwriters whose music has impacted me. Look into their eyes. For a moment time stops. Music and memories take over.

Really good work. I've been doing a lot of portraits myself lately and even thought about doing one of TC just yesterday ...
PJ Kirk replied:
Go for it! A good challenge. I used an ivory black and buff titanium which gives her skin a warmth to match her smile. I'll be on the lookout for your piece.
