When I sit down to draw a figure I'm most excited to draw the two things more artist avoid; hands and feet. In this painting I severely truncated the model's torso so I could get his hand and foot into the composition. I met Michael at a life drawing marathon. He was one of several models posing in our local community theater. His petite build, braid and soft belly gave him an androgynous quality. We exchanged numbers. I invited Michael to pose for several friends at my home. This painting is from one of those sessions. I draped a colorful beach towel over his chair. It was the perfect contrast to his black robe. Still one of my favorite paintings.
About PJ Kirk
Whether painting a person or a teapot, the goal is holding the viewer's attention. In this busy world it takes something remarkable to stop us in our tracks. That could be an event, like a surprising diagnosis or the unexpected death of a close friend. These events give us time to pause and reflect. A common vehicle into my psyche is music. This led me to start painting singer-songwriters whose music has impacted me. Look into their eyes. For a moment time stops. Music and memories take over.
